Casali di Casole : A treasure in the heart of Tuscany
Monday, 09 September 2024Nestled among the green hills of Tuscany, an hour from Florence and among Siena, San Giminiano and Volterra, the Casali di Casole estate is a veritable icon of history and luxury. Now transformed into an internationally renowned villas & farmhouses estate, it offers a journey through the centuries, reflecting the times and transformations of this enchanting region.
The first traces of Casali di Casole date back to medieval times. As early as the 9th century, the Casole d'Elsa region, where the estate is located, was already inhabited. Originally, a watchtower was erected to protect the locals from invasion. Over the centuries, this defensive structure evolved into a fortified complex, particularly under the influence of the Republic of Siena in the 13th century. At the time, the region was a theater of tension and conflict, particularly between Siena and Florence, who disputed territorial supremacy in Tuscany. The Bargagli family, one of the most influential noble families of the time, played a crucial role in the development of the estate, strengthening its defenses and enriching its architecture.
The 15th century marked a period of great prosperity for Casali di Casole, in the era of the Italian Renaissance. Architectural transformations by the Bargagli family and successive owners enriched the estate with characteristic Renaissance styles and elements. The gardens were laid out with cypress-lined avenues and elegant fountains, while the buildings were adorned with frescoes and sumptuous decorations. This period of splendor coincided with a time of relative political and economic stability in Tuscany, despite intermittent conflicts between the great city-states.
After several centuries of splendor, Casali di Casole entered a period of decline in the 19th century. The estate fell into disuse as socio-economic and political upheavals transformed Tuscany. The agricultural crisis, increasing industrialization and the loss of status of the aristocracy all contributed to the gradual abandonment of the estate. However, in the early 20th century, private American investors rediscovered this rare gem. Recognizing its historic potential and picturesque setting, they initiated restoration work between the 1960s and 1980s. The aim was to restore the estate to its former glory, while integrating modern amenities.
In 2005, Timbers Resorts, a company specializing in luxury residences, acquired the entire estate, including both Casali di Casole and the main castle - Castello di Casole. Timbers then undertook an extensive renovation, transforming the estate into a luxury complex while preserving its rich historical heritage.
In 2018, Timbers Resorts decided to sold the Castle to Belmond. Today the two neighbors maintains a very good relationship.
Today, Casali di Casole embodies the very essence of Tuscany, offering a unique experience rooted in a harmonious blend of past and present, nature and culture.
